US newspaper round-up: Fed minutes, Dell, Apple/Yahoo...

10 Apr 13

LONDON (ShareCast) - Policymakers in the States still remained divided over their views on easy money policies, writes USA Today. Citing the earlier-than-expected minutes from the latest meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, the paper reports some members wanted to move faster towards ending quantitative easing on concerns over “financial imbalances”.

Blackstone is looking for partners to join its bid to take Dell private, people close to the situation told The Wall Street Journal. “Any technology firm that joins the private-equity giant's potential bid for Dell would likely be involved in the company's strategic direction as well as having a financial role, the people said.”

Tech giant Apple and internet search engine firm Yahoo are thought to be in talks about a deeper iPhone partnership that could see some of Yahoo’s services made more prominent on Apple’s gadgets, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The USA Today says that the number of homes up for sale in America rose by 2.4% in March but were still down 15% year-on-year. “The low inventory of homes for sale in many markets is helping drive up prices and is being closely watched as the spring selling season takes hold,” the paper writes.

The New York Times cites a new report that has identified companies vulnerable to takeovers from activist investors, specifically Third Bancorp, Ameren or ConAgra Foods. “The vulnerable companies make the list because any activist shareholder that acquires a 14% stake would have a high likelihood of winning a takeover battle, according to a report released Wednesday by Rotary Gallop,” the paper says.

According to The Washington Post, President Barack Obama is planning to release details of a $3.77tn spending plan on Wednesday that includes new investments in infrastructure and education, taxes for the rich and cost reductions in Social Security and Medicare.
